Tosyl Group

Structure

TosylGroup-2.gif

A tosyl group consists of a sulfonyl group (RSO2R') bonded to a toluene ring (C6H5CH3). Most commonly the sulfonyl group is bonded to the ring opposite the methyl group, making the complete structure a p-toluenesulfonyl group.

Examples

Tosyl Chloride

Because TsO- is an excellent leaving group, tosyl chloride is useful for base-catalyzed dehydration of alcohols.

Tosic Acid

Tosic acid is useful for reactions carried out in organic solvents because its large hydrophobic toluenyl group makes it very organic soluble. It is often used to dehydrate alcohols.
